WILLIAM E. STANLEY, P. Eng., CMC
W.E. (Bill) Stanley is a retired partner with Coopers & Lybrand Consulting (PriceWaterhouseCoopers) and former Director of the firm’s Canadian and international mining practices. His consulting career over the past forty five years has incorporated both international mining assignments and a variety of projects for most of the major mining companies in Canada. He was an Adjunct Professor in UBC’s Department of Mining and Mineral Process Engineering, and is on the Board of Directors of, Shore Gold Corporation. He is a former Director of Westmin Resources Limited, Gibraltar Mines Limited, Teck Corporation and Luscar Limited. Miramar Mining and Farallon Mining.
Bill is an active member of the professional mining community through his involvement with industry-related organizations, especially the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum (CIM), of which he was President in 1991/92. In 1984 he was presented with the CIM Past Presidents’ Memorial Medal and in 1994 he was the recipient of the CIM’s Distinguished Service Medal – the highest honour of the Institute – in recognition of his contribution to the Canadian mining industry. He is also a Fellow of the Institute. He was Honorary Chairman of the 1997 CIM AGM Vancouver is on the Boards of the CIM Foundation, the CIM Centennial Corporation and has represented the CIM on the Board of the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame. He is Past (Founding) Chairman of the Mining Suppliers, Contractors & Consultants Association of B.C.
He has also served on numerous Boards and committees of the Salvation Army, including Grace Hospital, Grace Communities Corp and the Salvation Army Planning Council, and is Corps Sergeant Major of the North Vancouver Corps. Currently he is a member and past Chairman of the Board of Focus on the Family (Canada).
Bill has an international reputation as a lecturer to the mining industry. In 1981 he was honoured by the CIM with the Distinguished Lecturer’s award. He has authored numerous papers for publication, ranging in topics as diverse as mine accounting, socio-economic impact analyses and profit improvement to more personal management/lifestyle themes as “Turn Your Stress into Rest”, “Motivation” and “The Quality of Work Life”. He was closing speaker at the 1992 ASEAN Congress in Manila, and in 1994 delivered the plenary address at the XV Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions in Johannesburg, South Africa.
He is a graduate of the Provincial Institute of Mining, Haileybury, Northern Ontario and holds a B.Sc. in Mine Engineering from Michigan Technological University. He is married to Marie, and they have three adult children and seven grandchildren. His hobbies include flytying, flyfishing, photography and gardening.
